The Copper Counties USBC hosted the Arizona State USBC Annual Meeting on March 12-13, 2011. Here are some pictures of the bowling writers dinner on Saturday night. Congratulations to Lillie Christian for her selection to receive the President's award and to Vida Nelson for receiving her award from the Arizona Bowling Writers.

Local Bowling Hall of Fame Established

The Copper Counties USBC Bowling Association has established a Hall-of-Fame for the first time since the former men’s association and women’s association merged in 2007.  The first inductee is Roger Warrick, who was honored at a dinner at La Casita Restaurant in Sierra Vista on Saturday, September 18.  Attending the dinner and ceremony were the current Copper Counties Board of Directors and their guests, including board members from Safford and Douglas.

Roger Warrick receiving his award.                                Richard Smith receiving the President's

                                                                                               gavel from Roger Warrick

Following the dinner a ceremonial “passing of the gavel” took place between Roger Warrick as outgoing President and Richard “Smitty” Smith, the newly elected President of the Copper Counties Board.  Smith then presented Warrick with a plaque commemorating his induction into the Hall of Fame, after which dinner guests shared favorite stories about Roger.

Roger Warrick has been active in local and state bowling associations since his early teens.  Most recently he has served on the Copper Counties USBC Bowling Association and the Arizona State USBC Bowling Association.  He has held many offices and retired as Presidents of the Copper Counties Assn. in August.  He currently serves as tournament chairman for the State Association.

Although Warrick’s award was for meritorious service, he could well qualify for a performance award in Colorado where, in 1997, he rolled an 857 series (279-278-300) in the Colorado State Seniors Tournament.  This score helped him to win the singles and all-events titles.

Smith announced that the association would attempt to induct at least one person per year into the hall of fame and all bowlers are encouraged to submit names of both men and women for nomination.  There are two categories for eligibility:  meritorious service and performance.  Nominations may be submitted to any Board member at any time.

Vida's article for Oct. 20, 2009

Bob Winter, one of Sierra Vista’s most beloved bowlers and friend to many, lost his wife of 63 years, Georgie Mae, last week after a short battle with Cancer.

Bob has been an institution in the local bowling community and all his fellow bowlers offer their heartfelt condolences at this time.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 24 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 2145 S. Coronado Dr. at 11.00 am.

This past week-end two very competitive tournaments happened at Desert Lanes.

The Youth Desert Shootout saw two girls advance to the finals. Serena Stark came in first and Anna Regalada came in second.

The Mixed Doubles Tournament had a large turn-out with some of Sierra Vista’s best bowlers vying for prize money.  Bryan Grimm and Heather Munger took top honors in the doubles event with a 1,356 handicap score and Nathan Tuggle won in the Singles event with a handicap score of 746.

The hottest match this week is between Sierra Toyota and the Outkasts on the Thursday Men’s Diamond League.  Not only do both teams have the same pin total count but each team has a member who has bowled a perfect game this year:  Gary Williams of Sierria Toyota and Bryan Grimm of the Outkasts.  This is position round and it’s just too close to call as to whether the Outkasts will topple Sierra Toyota from first place.

There’s still time to enter the  Copper Counties Open Tournament in November.  The dates are Nov. 14, 15, 21, and 22nd. This tournament will have high game side pots, optional high three event. and instant cash for split conversions. Entries close Nov. 7.  Entry forms may be picked up at Desert Lanes on Ft. Huachuca.

Vida Nelson may be reached at 559-3632 or www.vidanelson@aol.com.

Vida Nelson'a article for Oct. 13, 2009

Junior bowling is alive and well at Desert lanes under the leadership of Ernie Benjamin.

Kids can bowl in three leagues: Desert Classic (scholarships) and Desert (trophies) for up to age 19; and Desert Pee Wee (up to age 6).  Pee Wees must have the ability to roll 2 games with bumpers. Parents wishing to put their children in any of these leagues should contact Desert Lanes at 533-2849 or Ernie Benjamin at 456-2071.

Several leagues continue to be close as teams jockey for first place. In the Desert Winter League, Duke Preble helped propel the Desert Dukettes into a first place tie with the Go Getters. The point spread has gotten tighter in this League with only 2½ points separating the top six teams.

Golden Rama has nudged Sierra Toyota out of first place in the Diamond Men’s League while the Friday Night Mixed League shows only 1½ points separating the top five teams.

The Mixed Doubles Tournament at Desert Lanes is this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Teams can sign up on Saturday. A second shift will be added if needed.  Individuals may bowl more than once with a different partner.  Contact Desert Lanes or Ron Fay (458-8502).

Also coming up in November is the Copper Counties 4rh Annual Open Championship Tournament. This tournament will have high game side pots, optional high three event. and instant cash for split conversions. Entries close Nov. 7.

Vida Nelson's article for Sept. 20 - 29, 2009

If last weeks scores are any indication of things to come, there will be a number of perfect games bowled before the year is out.

Ken Foster, bowling on the Golden Rama team in the Men’s Diamond League shot a 300 and Glenn Patterson, bowling on the Hanger Prosthetics team in the same league rolled a 299.  Ken’s game helped put his team into a first-place tie with Sierra Toyota.

Gary Fukuda shot a 300 game on his way to a 755 series in the Friday Night Mixed League but it wasn’t enough to top the week’s scores.  That honor went to Glenn Patterson in the Wed. Night Mixed League.

Also in the Fri. Night Mixed League, Jessica Prades rolled her second 700 series of the year, as she dominated the women’s scores.

Handicap scores will change dramatically next week when leagues who have been using book averages begin to include handicap scores on their standing sheets.

The first tournament of the year will be a mixed doubles Oct. 17 at Desert Lanes and is open to all adult bowlers sanctioned in the Copper Counties Bowling Assn. Pick up registration forms at Desert Lanes or call Ron Fay  at 458-8502 for more information.

League secretaries are reminded to get their scores to Vida Nelson at www.vidanelson@aol.com. She can also be reached at 559-3632. Scores must be in by noon on Sunday or they will not be included.

The new board of directors is listed under the information tab.

The Friday Night Mixed League Champions are shown below. The team ws sponsored by Lynda's Barber Shop and the team presented Lynda with the Championship Plaque. Good bowling.

On Saturday, May 16, 2009, Louanna Fay and Richard Smith presented checks to Ernie Benjamin, Youth Coordinator, at Desert Lanes. The checks are for the Desert Lanes Youth Program and come from the leagues. The Officers and Friends League collected $76.00, the Sunday PBA Sport League collected $100.00, and the Friday Night Mixed League collected $720.00, for a total of $896.00. Some leagues use a portion of their 50/50 to help support the youth and some leagues use part of the weekly fees, i.e. $0.05 per person per week. The money is used by the Desert Youth to help offset expenses, such as tournament entries and scholarships.

Does your league help support our youth? If not, why not? For more information contact the association manager for ideas.
