Vida Nelson's Newspaper Articles November 23 Article Scores continue to soar at Desert Lanes with Ken Thurman rolling a 299 in the Thursday Night Men’s Diamond League last week. Right behind Ken was Mike Peterson with a 289 shot in the Las Vegas League. Also in the Las Vegas League, Jennifer Dovers rolled a really nice 645 series. Although the ultimate goal of this league is a year-end trip to Las Vegas, members never lose their competitive edge from week-to-week. Almost lost in the shuffle was the 280 rolled by Bill Sutera and the 279’s by Matt Reynolds in the Diamond Men’s League and Bryan Grimm in the Friday Night Mixed. Perhaps the comeback of the year has to go to Bill Janes with a 258 in the Seniors on Post League. This remarkable feat was accomplished within a week of Bill returning to bowling after suffering a setback from heart by-pass surgery. Jessica Prades led the ladies with a 248 game on her way to a 676 series in the Desert Winter League. And in the Wednesday Night Mixed League, Jessie tied with Janette Guilmette for a 236 high game. Desert Lanes will host a 9-pin no-tap tournament on Saturday, Dec. 11 at 1:00 pm. Only one shift is scheduled and the tournament is open to all Copper Counties USBC members age 14 and up. The cost is $15.00 per person. Application forms may be picked up at Desert Lanes. Note to league secretaries: Don’t forget to apply for local awards for your bowlers. The talk around Desert Lanes this week is about the perfect game rolled by Bryan Grimm on the “Going Balls Deep” team in the Friday Night Mixed League. It’s hard to believe this is Bryan’s first sanctioned 300 because he regularly rolls 700’s and even had an 827 in the fall of 2009. In fact, this week he had a second 700 (754) series in the Las Vegas League. In commenting on his score, Bryan said, “I’m glad I was able to do it with so many family and friends around.” When contacted, his grandmother, Fern York was ecstatic. “ I Saw it on his Facebook page and congratulated him on his game. We’re really proud of him and it’s just the greatest thing. We hope he keeps doing really well,” said Mrs. York. Oddly enough, even with his 300, Bryan did not have the high scratch series Friday night. That honor went to Matt Fox who rolled a 782 series (269, 234, 279). Because this column does not report team scores, bowlers are not privileged to see the various team names in leagues other than their own. But there are some really fun names out there. The Sunday Night League has a team called, “Wish We Were #1.” Ironically, as of last week they were tied for first place. If they keep up the good work, they may have to change their name. The Alley Gators on the Wednesday Night Mixed League are a clever play on words, as are the Coconut Heads in the Desert Winter League. Please tell us you’re referring to your bowling balls, ladies. Note to bowlers: Sometimes the high handicap series reported is lower than the high scratch series. The reason for this is that these leagues do not allow for the same bowler to obtain both awards. It is now the fourth week of bowling and local leagues that have been using book averages will start recording handicap scores this week. Many local bowlers have no idea that Copper Counties Bowling Assn. has a manager who is the only paid employee of the association. John Doyle, who has been in this position since 1991, starting with the previous ABC Men’s Association, processes USBC memberships, operates all tournaments, issues awards (both local and national) and, in general, keeps things running smoothly behind the scenes so that bowlers can have a great experience. John has been the secretary of the Arizona State Association since 1991 and his duties there are basically the same as locally except he doesn’t process memberships. Running tournaments at the state level also incorporates negotiating with bowling centers and coordinating hotel accommodations, both for youth and adults. John also coordinates all state level meetings and paid staff who work the tournaments. Bowlers who have been around for awhile probably remember that John operated the pro shop at Vista Lanes in Sierra Vista from 1986 until 2002 when Vista Lanes closed. John bowls in the senior leagues, as well as the Men’s Diamond League at Desert Lanes. He has been bowling with the same guys since 1984-85. John’s other life besides bowling before he retired was as an officer in the U.S. Army Reserve where he served for 38-1/2 years. Because John spends about 35 hours a week working for the local and state associations, one could determine that he still has a full time job which his wife, Linda, would agree keeps him out of trouble in his retirement. All of the adult bowling leagues are off to a good start at Desert Lanes and the youth are about to begin. For the past two weeks, Nicole Brockway, Ron Fay, and Ernie Benjamin have been registering youth to bowl in youth leagues: Desert Classic, which bowls for scholarships, Desert Youth which bowls for trophies (both up to age 19), and Desert Pee Wee (up to age 6). Pee Wees must be able to roll two games with bumpers. Erin Comprosky has joined the youth leadership team as a Level 1 coach. Erin will be coaching the pee wee and youth leagues. The leagues are already privileged to have the services of Bronze Level coach Ron Fay, who has been working with the youth for many years. Erin is familiar to many bowlers in the area because he bowled as a youth with the junior leagues from 2001-2004. He left the state and is now back in town attending college. While bowling in the junior leagues locally, Erin won scholarship money in several tournaments, most notably the YABA State Tournament which he won in 2004. Erin has used his scholarship money to attend college. Children who have not already registered may do so on the first day of bowling, Saturday, November 6. Bowlers are reminded that until Jeannie’s Diner is open and running again, drinks and snacks may be brought into Desert Lanes. Bottled water and sodas are sold during the daytime leagues, while hot dogs, sandwiches, sodas, water and beer are sold during nighttime leagues. Much to the relief of local bowlers, Desert Lanes has reopened on Ft. Huachuca for the first time since the end of January. And after a week of adjustments, the bugs are being ironed out and bowling is getting back to normal. League secretaries are reminded to post their scores on leaguesecretary.com or bowl.com as soon as possible each week. Those who don’t must e-mail or call in their scores by 6:00 pm on Sunday in order to get them in the newspaper that week. Not every league has reported standings yet but from the ones that have, it looks like some high scores are going to be posted again this year. Rob Shepherd and Paul Fisher got the year off to an amazing start, each with a series of 736 in the Men’s Diamond League and Ken Foster rolled an incredible 701 in the Friday Night Mixed League. And it looks like the men are going to have competition from the women as Jessica Prades had a 683 series on the Wednesday Night Mixed and Bev Pederson rolled a 630 in the Desert Winter. The senior leagues that previously ran on Tuesdays and Thursdays have changed. They now run on Mondays and Wednesdays at 1:00 pm. Seniors 55 or older are eligible to bowl. Any spouse of an eligible senior who is 50 or over may also bowl. The senior leagues do not have teams and points are earned based on individual scores. Essentially, each bowler is bowling against him (or her) self. Pre-bowling and make-ups are available on Fridays at 1:00 pm.
